DAINTREE /CAPE TRIBULATION RAINFOREST
The
oldest tropical rainforest in the world,
primeval - a World Heritage region. These
rich and luxuriant rainforests are home to more
than 200 animal species, a number of man's most
precious plants and a haven for some of
Australia's most interesting birds; not to mention
the unique flora and fauna, found only in this
area.
Taste Bush foods and identify Bush
medicines in an area of pristine, privately owned
rainforest, surrounded by the Daintree National Park. Scramble up an
unspoilt stream to a series of waterfalls. Soak up the atmosphere and
cool off in the rockpools.
See giant buttresses, liana vines, epiphytes
and other fascinating flora; learn to recognise stinging trees. Be the
first to spot shy forest dragons, harmless tree snakes and frogs - even
an elusive cassowary.
Take a journey up the steep 4WD Bloomfield Track
to see the powerful Bloomfield Falls cascading
down.
THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK
History, unique landscapes, aboriginal culture and
more, make up the Australian Outback.
Undara Volcanic National
Park - the planet's largest and longest single lava
flow
formed only 190,000 years ago, the youngest of Australia's volcanic
systems.
Chillagoe - A marble mining centre where huge slabs lie piled, awaiting
transportation. Take a guided tour through the caves, where stalagmites,
stalactites and flowstone columns are visible; as are configurations
depicting the Madonna’s face and the portly figure of Queen Victoria.
The ruins of the mine smelter dominate the skyline and from the top of
the flattened slag heap, magnificent views are possible. Nearby, the
incredible Balancing Rock continues to defy gravity and attract
photographers.
Jowalbinna
Aboriginal Art -
The comfort of the tented bush camp is welcome after a day’s journey.
The following day, a professional guide will escort guests and interpret
the wonderfully preserved Aboriginal art and cave paintings. Arguably
the finest rock painting galleries in Queensland.
Tyrconnell Mine -
Sense Mt. Mulligan's eerie atmosphere, the scene of Australia's worst
mine disaster. Visit Tyrconnell Gold Mine and watch the stamping battery
in action. Catch gold-fever as you go back in time.
Cooktown -
Steeped in history, the townspeople re-enact Captain James Cook’s
landing every year in June. Cooktown boasts a wonderful museum; also a
cemetery of great historical interest. Grassy Hill at sunset is a must.
Enjoy the same spectacular views, as seen by Capt. James Cook, 200 years
earlier. Travel the outback road (returning via 4WD Bloomfield Track).
Mitchell River
-
Explore the picturesque Mitchell River in the outback. A true 4WD
experience. Take a swim in the cool and refreshing waters.
THE
TABLELANDS
This area comprises rich
farmlands, spectacular waterfalls, tranquil lakes and craters. Hypipamee
was created by escaping gases during the area’s formative years and is
now home to platypus. There are interesting trees such as the well known
Curtain Fig, the towering Cathedral Fig the giant Red Cedar and Twin
Kauri Pines. It is a region well worth a visit - a must for the keen
photographer.
Granite Gorge -
Set amid rolling grass and scrub covered hills, hundreds of huge granite
boulders lie piled one upon another to create unusual rock formations.
Tranquil reflections in hidden rock pools and shy rock wallabies make
this a photographer’s paradise. A dip in a tree-fringed rock pool is a
delightful way to cool down. |
